Pia Malmstrup ist eine eher zurückhaltende und introvertierte Künstlerin – was zunächst überrascht, da ihre Werke lebendig, kraftvoll und durchaus als Statement zu bezeichnen sind. Seit über 20 Jahren arbeitet sie als Künstlerin in Dänemark, unterbrochen lediglich durch drei Jahre auf der Insel Jersey, wo ihre Arbeiten mit großer Begeisterung aufgenommen wurden.
Ihre inspirierenden Farben, ihr sensibler Umgang mit Licht sowie ihre dynamische Ausdruckskraft und spürbare Energie haben ihr insbesondere auf den südlichen britischen Inseln einen Namen gemacht. Dort präsentierte sie ihre Werke in zahlreichen Galerien und Ausstellungen.
Ursprünglich aus Dänemark stammend, ist Pia Malmstrup inzwischen wieder in ihrer Heimat tätig und bringt ihre Arbeiten nach Kopenhagen, wo sie neue Möglichkeiten nutzt und mit frischer kreativer Energie arbeitet. In den letzten vier Jahren führte sie eine eigene kleine Galerie in Dänemark, in der ihre farbintensiven Werke auf große Resonanz bei Kunstliebhabern stießen.
Schon früh entwickelte sie eine Leidenschaft für Kunst und kreatives Arbeiten – von der Gestaltung von Masken über das Entwerfen von Kleidung bis hin zur Dekoration feiner Porzellanobjekte. Nach ihrem Studium an der Kunsthåndværkerskolen in den 1980er-Jahren begann sie zunächst mit Aquarellmalerei. Heute bevorzugt sie die Materialität und Unvorhersehbarkeit von Öl, Acryl und Tinte. Durch den Einsatz von Blattgold und das Spiel mit Licht und Struktur entstehen besonders eindrucksvolle Effekte, die jedem Werk seine eigene Einzigartigkeit verleihen.
In ihren Arbeiten treffen häufig scheinbare Gegensätze aufeinander – Ordnung und Chaos, Abstraktion und Realität. Diese Spannung spiegelt sich auch in ihrer eigenen Persönlichkeit wider. Das Leben ist komplex, intensiv und oft herausfordernd – und genau diese Dynamik wird in ihren Bildern sichtbar. Während ein zentrales Motiv Stabilität ausstrahlen kann, entfaltet sich der Rest des Bildes in kraftvollen, emotionalen Bewegungen, die sowohl als Ausdruck von Energie als auch von Leidenschaft gelesen werden können.
Obwohl sie meist mit einer inhaltlichen Idee beginnt, bleibt ihr Arbeitsprozess offen und wandelbar. Jedes Werk entwickelt sich im Verlauf eigenständig weiter, wobei Pia eher als Begleiterin und Impulsgeberin agiert.
Neben der Malerei arbeitet Pia Malmstrup auch mit Bronze und Leder. Ihre Werke wurden in Dänemark, Portugal, Deutschland und auf Jersey (Kanalinseln) ausgestellt. Darüber hinaus war sie zehn Jahre lang Gründerin und Vorsitzende eines dänischen Kunstvereins und engagiert sich mit großer Leidenschaft in der Organisation von offenen Atelierprojekten.
Pia Malmstrup is a somewhat modest and introverted artist, which comes as a surprise as her work is vivacious, bold and what one might call a statement. Pia has worked as an artist for 20 years in Denmark only interrupted by three years in the State of Jersey where her work was received with gusto.
Inspiring colours and use of light, coupled with dynamic flair and an energy that you can really feel from every piece, has made quite a name for Pia in the southern British Isle and she has showcased her work to the public at a number of galleries and intimate exhibitions.
Originally hailing from Denmark, Pia Malmstrup is back on home turf, bringing her work to Copenhagen, where she is settling into new opportunities and refreshed creative verve. For the past 4 years, Pia has had her own little gallery in Denmark, where art lovers have welcomed her colorful paintings with pleasure.
Infused with a passion for art from a very early age, Pia’s love of creativity was cemented by making plasma masks, designing and making clothing for friends and spending time decorating delicate pieces of china. Having attended Kunsthåndværkerskolen, art school in the 1980’s, Pia set out on her artistic journey using predominantly watercolours. Nowadays, Pia prefers the texture and unpredictability of oils, acrylics and ink. She plays with light and texture using delicate gold leaf and striking effects are borne from the uniqueness of each piece.
Her work is often dominated by the sometimes conflicting concepts of order and chaos, abstract and reality and this energy comes from Pia herself. Life is complex and often fraught and fast, sometimes Pia captures the robust and sturdy central focus as the rest of the painting splays outward with what could be described as either fury or sheer, unadulterated passion. Either way, the outcome of each and every piece is determined by the feelings within the artist; Pia is an exceptionally candid and open human being and her work offers a glimpse into her life.
Although she begins with an idea of the subject that will be her focus, the process she experiences is fluid, open to change, and each piece can take on a life of its own with Pia as guide or facilitator.
Pia also works in bronze and leather and has exhibited in Denmark, Portugal, Germany, and Jersey (CI). She has been the founder and Chair of a Danish art club for 10 years and has a love for running big open studio projects.
